Mission statement. Against the Babel of voices proclaiming knowledge of Poe, The Poe Journal intends to provide true insight into the nature of Poe, into the primal essence metaphysicians call Poeity. Poe is not just a certain canine specimen in a certain domicile in a small city on Earth, but a way of life. In these pages the leading philosophers, psychologists, and theologians of our day grapple with the most difficult questions and provide a barricade against the reductionist critics rallying behind the banner of anti-anthropomorphism. We pledge to provide greater accuracy through the use of field studies of the archetypal Poe and through presentations of his own intellectual output. And unlike the populist periodicals covering the phenomenon that is Poe, such as Poeple and Poerade, we are dedicated to substantive studies of deeper meaning. Rather than chosing the easy way out, but we hope to provide understanding for those nobler readers who can truly appreciate what it means to be a Poe.
